Pregnancy & Adoption Resources
How to Update Your Benefits & Resources Included in Your CoverageThis page provides an overview of the resources and services available to full-time Team Members navigating the birth or adoption of a child.
Updating Your Benefits
The birth or adoption of a child is considered a qualifying life event, allowing you to make changes to your benefits outside of the annual open enrollment period.
- You have 30 days from the birth or adoption of your child to add them to your benefits by requesting a change in status. You will need to provide a birth certificate, verification of birth, or adoption paperwork to validate your life event.
- Once your request is reviewed by a Benefits Partner, your child will be added to your insurance coverage as of their date of birth or adoption.
Adding Your Child as a Dependent in Workday
You will need to add your child as a dependent before adding them to your medical and/or dental coverage. Follow the Workday Job Aid for Adding Dependents for step-by-step instructions on how to add your new child as a dependent on your Workday profile.
If you are adding a dependent to your medical and/or dental coverage, our third-party vendor, Consova, will contact you directly to conduct a dependent eligibility audit. Review the Dependent Eligibility information for further details.

Medical & Dental Insurance
Medical
Michaels offers several medical plan options, all with prescription drug coverage. As your family is growing, it’s important to review the different plan options we offer and select the one that best aligns with your budget and medical coverage needs.
Health Savings Account (HSA)
Having a Health Savings Account (HSA) might help with some of the medical costs associated with having a baby. You have the option of opting into a Choice HSA plan if you choose to change your elections and medical plan through your birth event.
Dental
During this time, it will also be beneficial to review your current dental coverage, as you might want to add your growing family to your plan.
Virtual Health Care Services
BCBSTX Medical Plan Participants
MDLIVE lets you visit independently contracted MDLIVE board-certified doctors when you may need care. MDLIVE doctors may help treat non-emergency medical and pediatric health issues. Plus, they may even write and send prescriptions to a nearby pharmacy, when appropriate.
Kaiser Medical Plan Participants
With Kaiser Telehealth, you can use everyday devices like your smartphone, laptop, or tablet to get care outside of where your typical care team is physically located. Telehealth usually means connecting virtually with a health care professional while you’re out in the real world, such as in your backyard, at the park, or at the beach. However, telehealth can take place during office visits, too, like when your doctor consults with a specialist in another room or facility.
Adoption Assistance
If you are eligible for adoption assistance, Michaels will reimburse you up to $5,000 per adoption to help cover adoption fees, attorney fees, court costs, travel expenses, medical fees for the child, and temporary foster care.
To apply for adoption assistance, you must meet all criteria outlined in the Adoption Assistance Policy and complete the necessary form within six (6) months of the finalization of the adoption.

Paid Parental Leave (PPL)
Michaels has a Parental Leave Policy available for Salaried Team Members, Store Managers, and Assistant Store Managers. This policy provides up to eight (8) weeks of paid time off for the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child.
This leave time is to be used within one (1) year of the birth or adoption of the child. PPL runs concurrently and is offset by other paid leaves such as state disability or Short-Term Disability (STD).
Hourly Team Members are currently not eligible for PPL; however, they may request unpaid time off for the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child.
Exempt Team Members who welcome a child and who are not also the birth parent will also receive PPL covering 100% of their base pay for up to 8 weeks.
After 8 weeks of PPL, parents can take up to two additional weeks (80 hours) of sick time, vacation, or personal pay based on available balances and in accordance with all applicable Company policies.
Maternity Leave
Our maternity leave for mothers giving birth is common among retail companies. Most retailers provide at least six (6) weeks of Short-Term Disability (STD) pay during this time. In addition, the Federal Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave within one (1) year of the birth of a child or placement of a child for adoption or foster care.
The STD benefit will be paid based on your duration of disability. Generally, the duration for maternity disability is up to six (6) weeks following a normal delivery and up to eight (8) weeks following a C-section. The normal elimination period applies, beginning on the date the Team Member’s doctor reports the Team Member is disabled. There is no elimination period for maternity disability.
If your are an Hourly Team Member, you must enroll in STD coverage within 31 days after you become eligible or wait until the following open enrollment period.
Hourly Assistant Store Managers and Salaried Team Members are automatically enrolled upon becoming eligible.
